How papers match against each other when the same paper is submitted by a student in various circumstances
Students often submit the same paper accidentally to another drop-box, or submit a draft paper to a drop-box and need it to be replaced with the final version.
Once a paper has been submitted to a normal drop-box then it is there in the database to match against future submissions. However it does not necessarily match against the students' own future work - see table below.
NOTE: Submission to the test module TurnitinUK - test your text do NOT get added to the Turnitin database so do not count at all.
Will the paper in column 1 match with the paper in column 2 in Turnitin if the same student submits the exact same paper to:
Moodle Module (Class)
In other words…
Will Result in
SAME MOODLE MODULE
Resubmits the same paper over a few days to get updated matching reports.
No matches against their previous submissions - each submission overwrites the previous one (UNLESS a member of staff submits one of them on the student's behalf, in which case it is treated as a separate submission and will be matched)
SAME MOODLE MODULE
DIFFERENT DROP BOX
Submits the same paper to multiple assignment dropboxes in one module.
No matches against their previous submissions
Submits the same paper to another assessment in another module. I.e. Tries to submit the same paper for two assessments.
Will match against themselves. Academic on second module will not be allowed to see paper even though same student.
Someone tries to copy an existing Turnitin assignment into the same or another module.
Many problems. Turnitin assignments must NOT be copied or imported across module
If the originality report shows a match with a paper submitted to another University, or even to a module within this University that you don't have access to, then you can request "paper release". You will then get an email with the details of the matched paper. If it is within the University then the Moodle team will be able to check directly - get in touch.
