This information relates to Moodle 3.11 from September 2022 onwards

  1. Turn editing on and add a Label, Forum post, Page or any Moodle activity or resource which could involve using an image. (To add to a Forum it's not necessary to Turn Editing On.)
  2. The following example is a walk through of the screens that appear when uploading an image to a label in Moodle.
  3. In the text editor toolbar, click on the 'Image' icon as below:

  4. The Image properties window appears.
    Click Browse Repositories: the File Picker window will open




  5. You can upload a file OR add a URL to an image
  6. To upload an image file:
    • Select the "Upload and attribute a file (Xpert)" option in the file picker.
    • Select an image (by browsing to it) (JPG, PNG and GIF image formats are supported).
    • Add copyright holder information
    • Select the appropriate copyright license from the dropdown menu
    • Enter the copyright holder's URL if applicable
    • End the copyright year
    • Select image size.
    • Select background and text colours for the appended copyright information


    • Click "Upload this file"
    • Add an image description (ALT text), edit size or alingment as required, and click "Save image"

  • The image will now be inserted into your label with the attributed copyright information appended below the image

7. To add a URL link to an image:

    • Select the "URL Downloader (Xpert)" option in the file picker.
    • Add the URl of the image
    • Add copyright holder information
    • Select the appropriate copyright license from the dropdown menu
    • Select an appropriate Image size
    • Add the copyright year
    • Select background and text colours for the appended copyright information


    • Click "Download
    • Click on the downloaded image.
    • Click Select this file
    • Add an image description (ALT text), edit size or alingment as required, and click "Save image"

  • The image will now be inserted into your label with the attributed copyright information appended below the image
