How to: Add a Media Assignment Activity

You can easily create a Media Assignment so that your students can submit video or audio files for you to grade.

Quick reference guide 

  1. Log into Moodle, navigate to your Moodle module and click on the Turn editing on button (top right).
  2. Go to the section into which you want to add a media assignment and click on the + Add an Activity or Resource hyperlink.
  3. Select Media Assignment activity and click on the Add button.
  4. Complete the Name and Description and select other assignment options in the usual way.
  5. Once your students have submitted their media assignments, view and grade them online in Moodle.

Step by Step

1. Log into Moodle

   To create a Media Assignment, first log into Moodle.

2. Add a Media Assignment to your moodle module

Navigate to your Moodle module and click Turn editing on

From the + Add an Activity or Resource dropdown list select Media Assignment, and Add


Enter a Name and Description (This is visible to students inside the assignment submission window). and select other assignment options in the usual way.

Click on the Save and return to module or Save and Display button.

Students create and submit their Media Assignment submissions as follows:

Log into Moodle and click on the Media Assignment.

Click on the Add media submission button.

A new screen will open with an Add New button in the top-right. A drop-down menu will appear, enabling you to either upload a media file.
You can also select video or audio content you uploaded earlier.

Upload a media file

Click on Media Upload option in the drop-down menu, then click on the + Choose a file to upload button.

In the resulting window, select a media file from your computer to upload. The system accepts all common video and audio file formats.

As the file uploads, you will see a progress bar like this one:

Do not navigate away from the page until the upload is complete, or your upload will be cancelled.
Enter a Title and Description for your video and any search Tags (to make it easier for you to find again later).
Click on the Save button, then click on the Back to Browse and Embed hyperlink and click on the Select button next to your uploaded item.

Click on the Submit media button at the bottom of the page.

You should see a confirmation message like the one below:

Editing Teachers can Grade Media Assignments as follows: 

Click on the assignment name in your Moodle module

Click on  

You will see a screen showing the names of all of the students enrolled on the module, any grades and feedback given for this assignment, the submitted file (and the submission time and date), and a link to grade the item.  Please note, on some screen sizes you may need to scroll to the right or 'zoom out' to see all of these columns.  To zoom out, press  Cntrl  and  -  on your keyboard simultaneously.  If you cannot see a column, it may be 'hidden'.  Look for a + in the column title area to show the 'hidden' column.

To grade an item, click on the Grade link next to the piece of submitted work.

On the resulting screen you can Preview and Grade the media file, and type Feedback for the assignment.


 When the grading is complete click on the Save changes button.
